Traditional kitchen sinks have to be recessed into your countertop. Here’s some DIY installation advice from specialist manufacturers of laminate countertop edging.
Step One: Plan your sink installation First, check with your sink manufacturer to see if they will supply a cutting template along with your sink. If they don’t, you can make one yourself by setting the sink face down on the countertop and marking it out with a pencil, making sure the space at the front and back of the sink is even. Then, measure the lip of the sink and mark that inner guide line within your pencil outline. Note that it’s best to install your faucets and waste to the sink or countertop before the sink is secured in place. Step Two: Cut the recess hole Using a drill with an auger or flat bit, drill a hole in each corner of the sink position inside the inner guide line. Keep the drill at a precise right angle to the countertop for accuracy. Using a jigsaw, cut around the inside guide line, using the corner holes as starting points. Once you have made the hole, rest the sink inside it to see if it fits properly. Once you are happy with the fit, seal the cut edges of the countertop with a preservative primer. Step Three: Assembly Remove the sink from the hole and install faucets, waste assembly and overflow as per the instructions from your manufacturer. Once they are installed securely, caulk around the hole in the countertop to seal against moisture, or place the manufacturers gasket or seal around the edge if they have supplied one. Install the retaining clips around the sink edge and position the sink to ensure that you have enough access to connect the faucets to the water supply. Once you are happy with the position of the sink, tighten the retaining clips and wipe away any access sealant, and connect the faucets.
